Wake County (NC) School Diversity

Back in November, the Wake County (Raleigh, NC metro) voters booted out a school board that balanced the low-to-moderate (low-mod in planner speak) students by busing them around the district. Magnet "special programs" enticing suburban (read, academic achieving) students existed in older, more central schools. After forcing some schools to convert to year-round calendars and instituting a one-hour-early release every Wednesday (so teachers could meet), voters were fed up. As the new school board moves to dissemble these programs, the other part of the electorate is organizing in support of the old system. I think I have a middle way, at least where the busing is concerned and maybe some help with the magnet programs as well. BUSING My ex lives in an enclave of new development in southeast Raleigh (in the past a low-mod area). New Transportation Reauthorization by August?

US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood is confident that a new surface transportation reauthorization bill may be ready by August (Reuters Article) . Some think that any bill passed will be better than the current situation (18 months of continuing resolutions of SAFETEA-LU , and an interesting breakout of options from the : National Journal ). President Obama is finally getting to some infrastructure talk, both in the SOTU and to the US CofC . Regardless, this will be an interesting year for transportation.

Guerilla Character

I drive up Davis Drive most days into RTP through the Byzantine borders where Cary and Morrisville intertwine. It's mostly chock-a-block suburban architecture (higher quality and including multi-story mixed use lately, so kudos to the planning folks). I noticed this odd horsehead sculpture at the corner of High House and Davis that was just begging for a big unicorn horn. Somebody beat me to it. I think that's a whole roll of foil in that bad boy.
